In 1884, gelato maker Domenico Pepino moved his business from Naples to Turin, and opened a gelato workshop with the sign “Real Neapolitan Gelateria”. In a short time, thanks to the quality of the ingredients and originality of the recipes, he succeeded in winning over the difficult tastes of the local people.

Mr Pepino showed great resourcefulness, and, in the early 1900s, he participated in the International and Universal Expositions in Turin, where he gained recognition and acclaim.

On June 17 1916, Domenico Pepino sold all his secrets and his renowned business in number 1, Piazza Solferino for 10,000 lira to Giuseppe Cavagnino and Giuseppe Feletti, his son-in-law and father-in-law, both well-known Piedmontese food entrepreneurs. The two businessmen injected new impetus into the production and commercial side, and succeeded in exporting the gelato through the innovative use of dry ice.

They opened numerous ice cream shops in Italy and abroad, leading painter Golia to coin the slogan “PEPINO gelato goes everywhere!” in an advertisement of the time. In 1929, they moved the Gelateria store, to Piazza Carignano due to the strategic importance of the numerous theaters in the area.

It was 1939 and the world’s first chocolate-covered ice cream bar on a stick was patented and launched. It was called the “Pinguino” (penguin) and is still famed for its exceptional quality. It is still produced in classic flavors such as crema PEPINO, hazelnut, gianduja, violet, mint and coffee, plus several modern limited edition and cobranding versions.

Today, the story of Gelati PEPINO 1884 is kept alive by G. Cavagnino’s descendants. There is, in fact, a fifth generation – headed by the young Edoardo – whose mission it is to cement Gelati PEPINO’s status as a company producing Made in Italy excellence. He aims to maintain its high-end positioning and change the target sector by marketing nationwide, emerging from the exclusively Piedmontese niche to promote international expansion.
