The 2023 edition of the Open Systems module ended on Friday 14 July in the impressive halls of the Valentino Castle.

During the exhibition, the students of the ‘Aurelio Peccei’ Master’s Degree Course in Systemic Design had the opportunity to present the projects developed as part of the partnership signed by the Politecnico di Torino with Exclusive Brands Torino, which was officially presented at a press conference at the Unione Industriali Torino on 27 April.

The collaboration involves all manufacturers, but at this stage actively involves Costadoro, Guido Gobino, Galup, Varvello, Arti Grafiche Parini, Candioli Pharma, Codebò, Building and Vanni, who supported the students, who had the opportunity to apply the Systemic Design approach and methodology in a practical way.

The result was an exposition of real cases and concrete solutions to transform a linear system into a circular one. The young people – through an intense dialogue with the partner companies – made themselves the bearers of new opportunities, strategies and future visions for the sustainable development of value chains and territorial contexts, a theme very dear to the Network and amply developed in the Network’s Charter of Ethics.

The event marks the end of the first fruitful cycle of collaborations, which will be renewed over the next two years and will see the participation of new companies and student teams.

“The synergy between companies and universities has once again proved to be an effective model of collaboration to face current and future challenges and has helped to strengthen a new paradigm, strongly rooted in the collaboration between local players and the active involvement of the new generations,” said Silvia Barbero, Associate Professor at the Politecnico di Torino, co-founder and director of Sys – Systemic Design Lab, coordinator of the Systemic Design course and the Open Systems module.

“We are very proud of this collaboration, because excellent companies are truly such when one of their objectives is to support and help the new generations, who in turn can reciprocate by offering their skills and approach in interpreting and anticipating the changes of an increasingly complex and stratified world. It is a synergy that must be sought and renewed in ever new forms.” Giulio Trombetta, CEO of Costadoro and President of Exclusive Brands Torino

“Our Charter of Ethics, signed by all the network companies, dedicates one of its four commitment points to young people and the new generations: this shows how close the issue is to us. In particular, we have involved the students of the Open Systems module directly in the field, to develop systemic projects focused on the realities of the Exclusive Brands Torino companies. The results of this first moment of collaboration were particularly interesting and bode well for the next two years of synergy with the Politecnico di Torino, and confirm the shared values and objectives between us and the University.” Alessandra Girardi, Vice President of Vanni and Vice President of Exclusive Brands Torino

We often talk about inclusion, a topic that is as important as it is underestimated, especially in the digital sector. In fact, 98% of websites are inaccessible to people with disabilities.

Considering that 20% of the world’s population has a disability (UN data) it is an issue that needs to be paid attention to in order to have an increasingly inclusive society.

But what is meant by “web accessibility”?

It means that the IT systems used are able to provide their services also to users with temporary and non-temporary disabilities, and therefore use auxiliary technologies such as speech synthesis for example.

In just a few decades the planet has become increasingly digitalised and it is precisely from the development of new technologies and the growth in the importance of the web that the concept of digital inequality was born.

However, for us at Exclusive Brands Torino the value of inclusion has always been a key principle.

In fact, within our ethical charter we have highlighted our priority in evaluating the social and environmental impacts of our actions, with a focus on commitment and constant improvement in terms of the sustainability of production processes.

Each network operator therefore chooses to commit every day to supplying and exporting high-level products that also meet the needs of the planet and future generations.

It is on the basis of this mission that we have decided to make our site more accessible to users with disabilities. The blue icon at the bottom left symbolizes the possibility of browsing safely and personalizing the user experience also for people with:

Epilepsy

Learning and neurodevelopmental disorders

Motor disability

Low vision and blindness

Cognitive disabilities

In collaboration with AccessiWay we have therefore chosen to make our website usable by acting on four spheres: content, readability, colors and language. A small precaution that in our opinion can make a big difference.

We buy too much and waste more than ever: not only in the food sector, but also in the clothing and furniture sector, in that industry that is defined as fast fashion.

It is precisely from this awareness that the need arose to create, after Slow Food, an international association founded in 1986 from a winning idea by Carlo Petrini to promote “good, clean and fair” food, Slow Fiber, the first network of textile companies committed every day to producing durable and healthy garments and furnishing fabrics.

The project was born in the mind of the entrepreneur and professor of Public Law Dario Casalini, CEO of Oscalito 1936, one of the first companies that decided to enter the network of Piedmontese and Turin excellences, which was then joined by 16 other Italian companies, of which 3 were part of Exclusive Brands Turin.

Let’s talk about l’Opificio, a world of 100% Made in Italy fabrics and velvets made with elegance and attention to detail, but also of Pattern Group, the Italian hub for the design and production of luxury goods and Quagliotti which, for over 80 years, has entrusted the transformation of each weave into a timeless emotion to manual skill and the precision of artisanal looms.

Dario Casalini states: “Slow Fiber is a network of textile companies that not only expresses and represents the beauty of Italian design and fashion, but also wants to represent the idea of changes in values, which for me are the good, the clean, the right, healthy and durable.

The idea is to research and propose products and production models that pay attention to the aspects of chemistry (therefore the healthy), of the know-how of promoting the territories (the good), reduction of the environmental impact (the clean), of the protection of work and the promotion of traditional knowledge (right) and of offering products that last over time. We invite all companies that embody these values to join us and raise awareness among end consumers about choosing products that are good for society, the territory and the planet”.

Building was founded in Turin in 1983: designing, building, imagining, inventing the city and living, industry and commercial spaces, civil, private and leisure places, in Italy and abroad. The firm BP+P Boffa, Petrone & Partners was established within the Building Group and specializes in architectural design interventions and feasibility studies, interior design, building renovation, restoration and construction supervision.

The Building Group is part of the Exclusive Brands Torino network and with the other companies shares the typical values of Made in Italy. For the Building Group, what are these values?

Since Building was founded in 1983, we have based our philosophy and business on our passion for building: the history of the Group has been written by men who have dedicated their lives to building, with commitment, seriousness, expertise and, above all, innovation. This is reflected in the great attention to quality and the construction process: our goal as Building is to make each project stand out as unique, thus distinguishing it from standardized production.

Exclusive Brands Torino encompasses the companies of excellence in Piedmont. What are the peculiarities of this area?

Historically, our area has proven to be a crossroads of quality, tradition and culture, united by a willingness to continually challenge itself, renew itself and aim resolutely for the future. The city of Turin is emblematic in this regard: as strong in its historical and cultural roots as it is open to innovation and comparison with international scenarios. The area’s DNA is well reflected in several of the projects of the Building Group, which has made the rehabilitation and conversion of historic buildings one of its strengths: from The Number 6 to Lagrange12 and Quadrato, via Domus Lascaris and Uptown Torino.

What does the word “excellence” mean to the Building Group?

For us, the word “excellence” expresses the pursuit of perfection, the result of a synthesis of quality, experience and know-how that is poured into every smallest architectural choice. To this, the Building works add the desire to return to the community an architecture oriented by the values of technological innovation, environmental sustainability and the enhancement of art. With its art spaces open to the public and the pedestrianization of Dellala Street, the recently opened Domus Lascaris project is a prime example.

Through what strategies are you able to convey the Building Group’s character of excellence?

For years, the Building Group has been on a path of growth and excellence devoted as much to innovation in living, ranging from the rehabilitation of existing to luxury real estate, as to commercial building. This path is best expressed through our many projects, both domestic and international: in the 2020-2022 biennium Building will carry out an 80-million-euro investment plan, which from Turin is pushing the Group’s housing philosophy toward new, important goals.

The quality of Made in Italy craftsmanship is recognized all over the world. How do you export the values of Italian know-how?

It is possible to export the values and importance of our made in Italy by taking an increasingly global approach. Italian savoir-faire and products are already recognized around the world as synonymous with quality, style, attention to detail, and creativity: just think of The Number 6, our redevelopment project winner of “Building of the Year,” the award given by ArchDaily, one of the world’s most renowned architecture websites. It is essential to be aware of the extent of one’s value in order to be able to open decisively to international markets, confident that one can make a difference.

What characteristics should a product that claims to be Made in Italy have?

Quality of raw materials and work, refinement and style, a deep connection with tradition combined with a continuous desire to experiment and innovate.

For the Building Group, what are the strengths of Italian craftsmanship?

The strengths lie in the great value of experience rooted in the country’s history and culture, along with the passion and creativity that have always set us apart. For us “artisans” of Building, each work expresses the search for a balance between respect for the testimony of the past and the desire for contemporary expression.

To conclude: what goals does the Building Group have for the future together with EBT?

Together with EBT, as well as through our projects, we will help carry forward and spread our values, exporting our housing philosophy and the best of made-in-Italy architecture far beyond the borders of our Turin.

The quality goes beyond time and trends and becomes a trend in itself. This is evidenced by Oscalito, the brand founded in 1936 which for more than 80 years has never lost the thread, in the making of its knitwear of excellence.

Oscalito is part of the Exclusive Brands Torino network and with the other companies shares the typical values of Made in Italy. For Oscalito what are these values?

First of all, Oscalito is not just a brand. It is a philosophy. We love the Earth and its gifts. We respect them and work them gratefully. We borrow them to turn them into unique, natural, skin-friendly garments. Our garments are made with short supply chain, exclusively with natural, recyclable and biodegradable high quality fibers, they last and do not quickly become waste. We use only Italian or European suppliers who handle raw materials certified for environmental and health protection. Our Products respecting workers and promoting local community knowledge, valuing the” use of renewable energy during production, sustainable packaging, and recycled materials.

Exclusive Brands Torino encompasses the companies of excellence in Piedmont. What are the peculiarities of this area?

Turin and the entire Piedmont region have always been characterized by the ability to create. Of knowing how to do. While maintaining a soul from the “low profile,” In response to those who shout boasting about their achievements, we Piedmontese seek more substance by leaving out the outline. Let’s be concrete. And sometimes, I recognize, this is a limitation. Turin does and is, but often risks communicating it too little.

What does the word “excellence” mean to Oscalito?

Know how to create A totally Made in Italy product, respecting the rules of environmental sustainability and working exclusively with highly qualified products and personnel.

Through what strategies do you succeed in conveying Oscalito’s character of excellence?

Working uninterruptedly without ever losing its identity, structuring its brand on our principles and trying to enhance this focus through any communication tool. From social, to our label. Stitched and embroidered by hand.

The quality of Made in Italy craftsmanship is recognized all over the world. How do you export the values of Italian know-how?

It is several aspects that create the allure of Italian savoir-faire that the world recognizes us for. From our point of view: making use of a short supply chain, that is, vertical integration of production. The promotion of craft, industrial, technological knowledge of the area. The transmission of the warmth of a multifaceted culture characterized by knowledge rooted in time and passed down from generation to generation.

The production of quality, therefore durable goods (not intended to increase the amount of waste produced in the very short term) and in conclusion the environmental and social sustainability of production to be expressed at all stages of production in the supply chain. It itself an expression of culture.

What characteristics should a product that claims to be Made in Italy have?

In addition to what I technically explained earlier, I believe that Made In Italy is the ability to offer and sell not only products, but a real lifestyle, of oriented towards the pursuit of happiness and sustainable pleasure because they are respectful of the environment and the people involved, both in their production and consumption.

For Oscalito, what are the strengths of Italian craftsmanship?

Experience, craftsmanship and certainly an unmatched attention to detail.

To conclude: what goals does Oscalito have for the future together with EBT?

To be part of the EBT Network of Excellence, as a constituent component of our territory (Turin and Piedmont) to be promoted, giving luster to our territory (from global to local). What makes EBT much more interesting than any other business association, in my opinion, is the deep alignment with certain values that I believe define the only industrial model that is sustainable for the environment and social communities and that must prevail in the near future; as a corrective to the negative externalities caused by globalization.

grazie

It is something precious, of great value.

And when you can taste it, it is exquisite.

Today with two entrepreneurs who have made quality at all costs the key to their success of excellence.

They are Giulio Trombetta and Dario Casalini.

Giulio Trombetta 55 years old, is President and CEO of Costadoro–whose history began in 1890 in Turin-one of Italy’s leading industrial companies exporting to more than 30 countries with one major objective: to spread the culture of coffee throughout the world.

In 1936, the Oscalito brand was founded. Working only with high-quality natural fibres, it developed underwear and knitwear lines for men, women and children. In 2014, the third generation joined the company and Dario Casalini, a former law professor, gradually took the reins, leading the brand to renew itself and grow on an international scale, but always in the name of continuity.

What does it mean for you to be an excellent company?

GIULIO TROMBETTA

In my opinion, to be an excellent company today, you have to be socially useful. Being socially useful means having respect for the product, respect for the environment, respect for people. I’m talking about coffee and you certainly have to start with an excellent raw material. Already having respect for the environment – because in the whole production process one has to have an eye for the environment – one can therefore try to favour reuse, to try within one’s own production cycle to use elements that do not have a dramatic impact on the environment.

I believe we will be I believe we will be the first company in Italy to produce its entire production with compostable packaging that can be assimilated with organic waste. A big step forward, if you like, also economically because a compostable packaging now costs about three times as much as a normal one. Last but not least, respect for people. When I talk about people I talk about employees I talk about suppliers I talk about customers, so try to have an absolutely honest and transparent approach to all stakeholders involved in your production process.

So excellence, we said, must always be combined with tradition and innovation, and so here in this display case we have brought together a whole process that goes from respect for very old material traditions to the most modern research. I would ask Dario to tell us what is in this box and what tradition and innovation represent for him.

DARIO CASALINI

Unfortunately, we have a market system in which and innovation is perceived as novelty so as long as it is new and this has created an almost disposable market. For innovation, as Giulio rightly says, is a different thing, i.e. it means improving on the product and the process but respecting certain fundamental values. We only use natural fibres with a very short supply chain so all suppliers are Italian or European and we produce environmentally friendly garments in terms of production process and end-of-life. They are recyclable garments because they are natural and respect the person, both those who work in them and those who have to wear them because obviously wearing a garment made of natural fibres has an aspect of healthiness and protection that goes a little beyond what is the image we are used to associating with fashion.

In my opinion, innovation does not clash with craftsmanship, indeed craftsmanship for us is a value that is a counterpoint to the standardisation of products and also of the sales network that we are experiencing. We unfortunately pass through a city centre and everything is the same, we no longer know whether we are in Paris or London or Turin or Milan. Products are the same, and so having the promotion of ‘local know-how’ as a core value also means differentiation, it means making culture, and it means that for us, differentiation creates wealth.

We need to counteract the desire for homogenisation that exists globally and instead go and rediscover that cultural differences translated into the fashion industry creates deflation that needs to be acquired, shared and respected

And how nice it is when you can combine culture with entrepreneurship and culture goes in the direction of the future with research, innovation and also goes in the direction of the past, especially when there is a great tradition behind it. This bizarre object that you will now illustrate is indeed a witness to your ancient history. It’s a probe, isn’t it?

GIULIO TROMBETTA

That’s right, a sampler, a probe to take coffee samples. We have said before that an excellent company starts with an excellent product, so all batches of raw coffee that come back into the factory must be probed to see if there is a match with what was actually purchased. Since the time delay from purchase to receipt of goods can be as long as two, three or four months, we have to be extra sure that what we have purchased is actually what arrives at the plant. This object, which among other things is one of the very few objects in the company that has never changed – I think it is over 100 years old – is used to make a kind of core drilling in the bag in the cloth without breaking the bag and to be able to take a sample of raw coffee, to be able to test it, to be able to see if on an organoleptic level it corresponds to the peculiarities of the product we have bought. So in a company, having a history behind it is an asset, even if the risk of the historical company – as in our case, which is more than 130 years old – is to pass for an obsolete company, so one must always combine history, tradition with innovation, technology.

In my opinion, the secret is to rely on young people who are a resource within companies like ours, which are family businesses but not so much in passing on knowledge but in passing on values.

I always say that in the generational change from one generation to the next, the important thing is not the transfer of shares but the transfer of values, which must be really well perceived by the young because then they must be replicated in order to have a coherence and continuity like that of the old.

Speaking of continuity, I would ask a question about current events, in the sense that it is undeniable that this is a rather dark period because of the pandemic and all the repercussions, including economic ones, that it is having in Italy and around the world. In this case, is it possible to maintain continuity in production and quality, indeed in production excellence?

DC

As far as we are concerned, of course it is difficult for a company that produces from yarn to the finished garment, then weaves cut and sew, to do smart working, so smart working has been limited to a very few figures within the clerical sector, but then both the workers and the labourers, those who really are the lifeblood of the company, I must say that they have been exceptional and we will be grateful for a long time for their sense of responsibility and self-sacrifice for which we have never stopped. We also invented a very special mask that to date is still the only cotton mask certified as a CE medical device with a removable and interchangeable filter. However, they made it possible to continue the business and deliver everything in perfect timing, thanks to a very short supply chain. It is an absolute vertical integration because we have the material in house and therefore once we have the material, even raw material, we just have the wire and then we do everything else ourselves and this has been very much appreciated by our customers because, although it is true that the pandemic interrupted the sales campaign, then the restocking started and we were very much rewarded because we were among the few who could be completely autonomous on production and therefore give an extra service.

So it can be done, you have to have people, as Giulio says so well, who share your values, and I must say that our employees from the first to the last really share the values and goals in a heartfelt way.

Values and also economic goals for the future, would you like to tell us something?

I believe that in difficult economic times like these the temptation to go down in quality is strong. However, this is the wrong way to go. In my opinion, the only thing that differentiates us, us Ebt companies, similar companies even though we have absolutely different product types, is the spirit of always maintaining a very high level of quality.

My dream is to be able to make the customer an aware consumer because we do not need to ‘cheat the customer’. We need cultured customers.

I liked the word you used ‘culture’, the culture of coffee is a culture that in fact does not exist, we must try to create it and perhaps the big challenge for companies is to be able to make people appreciate quality because we are so presumptuous to believe that if the consumer becomes an aware consumer he is able to choose us and will choose us and it is never a question of price, It is never a question of price, because, as we were saying before, in difficult economic times, people, having less money, have learnt to relativise their spending, so I would rather have a coffee less, but when they have it, they want it to be good, and they are willing to pay a little more for it, because it has to be a moment of pleasure.

So in a time of crisis, the company becomes a cultural operator, which is precisely the sector that is suffering the most from the crisis.

DC

But in fact what Giulio says is great for me because the consumer education aspect is something that sets the whole group apart. The idea is precisely not to follow a taste and provide an extra material good. The point is that I have to educate you to distinguish and spend better, but as a matter of wellbeing, health and wellness, the two concepts are very much inseparable.

GT

Absolutely yes, also because now I don’t know about the yarn industry, but certainly in the food industry ‘what is good is also good, what is bad is also bad’ so we have to be able to understand what we actually eat and drink because it is absolutely essential.

So since your association aims to network, can this be one of the meanings of networking? network also of company culture

For me, and I always say that EBT is the most important association of which my company is a member, partly because it is a network of friends but mainly because we have two very special aspects. On the one hand, I am convinced that we represent a constituent component of the territory: for me, industry must stand alongside the elements that make up and define a culture – hence the landscape and art at all cultural manifestations. On the other hand, because these are companies that have an industrial model that is antithetical to the worst deviation of capitalism and globalisation. The fact of having short supply chains, supply chains of excellence that put quality before everything and ensure that the product has the right balance between value and price, but above all the fact of promoting an entire supply chain and local know-how that would be lost. Because the problem is that both Giulio and I probably have to teach all the skills we have in the company to those who come in: it is difficult nowadays to find someone who already comes in with some skills, apart from those that represent pure innovation, but we have to pass on the tradition to future generations and this for me is a fundamental thing, a commitment that we naturally have.

GT

I, on the other hand, believe that networking is absolutely fundamental because I think that the peculiarity of the true entrepreneur, besides versatility, is that of curiosity and hunger for knowledge. Quale occasione migliore è quella di confrontarsi con altri imprenditori? What better opportunity is there to engage with other entrepreneurs? I realise – I have only been in the EBT network for four years, but I have learnt so much from my colleagues even though they perhaps make absolutely different products, and I hope that they have learnt something from me, from my company, so this cultural exchange of values for me is fundamental and unavoidable and this is a first aspect. The second aspect is that very interesting co-marketing can be done with several of our companies. We just finished one with Pepino, we made an ice-cream a Pinguino with coffee which turned out to be a great success. The two companies had similarities – although they were of different sizes with absolutely different merchandise – but had an absolutely equal basic spirit: historicity, territoriality and a maniacal fixation on quality. We have made an ice cream where the coffee is at its maximum, the milk at its maximum, the chocolate at its maximum, and this has unified us and I believe that we can make others because, as I said, fantasy has no limit, so I hope one day to collaborate with Dario and others who are part of the network.

I thank you because when talking about business, the words that emerged most strongly were respect, culture, imagination, education, criticality, and this is rare and very valuable. Thanks again.

Every day we hear about made in Italy, business networks, quality, eco-sustainability… but what does it really mean for a company to embrace these concepts and live them every day?

Today we are joined by two entrepreneurs working in very different fields –toys and the design and construction of real estate –who will share with us their vision of business and doing business in Italy at this precise time in history.

Stefano Quercetti is CEO of the company, which was founded in 1950, and is now run by the second generation of the family, which holds 100% of the shares. Stefano is also involved in production: the choice of his course of study was decisive for his role in the company. When he joined the company, 32 years ago after graduating in Electronic Engineering, he was immediately able to put into practice the notions he had learnt during his studies at the Turin Polytechnic.

Luca Boffa is CEO of Gruppo Building which was founded in Turin in 1983 by the Boffa family; Luca with his father now leads the company with the aim of designing, building, imagining, inventing the city and living, industry and commercial spaces, civil, private and leisure places, in Italy and abroad. With a special focus on research into architectural solutions and materials. With the holding company Dad&Son they operate in various sectors, from taste with Ifse and Snodo, the food area of the OGR, to cosmetics with Alkemy and wellness with Alfieri6 Urban spa to luxury with Fly & Wine.

Talking about business in Italy today also means talking about values, values such as quality, research, respect. What does it mean for companies and networks of companies to embrace these values on a daily basis?

We asked two entrepreneurs today who work in very different sectors, at least on the surface. Stefano Quercetti and Luca Boffa. I start by asking Luca Boffa from Building what are the identifying values of his company that he found in Exclusive Brands Torino.

Luca Boffa

Certainly the main values of our company that bind and Exclusive Brands Torino are the search for a product of the highest quality, which does not necessarily mean luxury but means research into materials, means research into the best technology for that individual object or initiative. Then what we have tried to do especially for the past 10 years is to create a brand that few companies in real estate or construction have tried to do. So all this unites us with the network and we also share the desire to go outside Italy and bring excellence from outside Italy to Italy. We worked in Russia St. Petersburg from 2002 until today, we moved to China a couple of years ago. So it is the network’s mission to start in Turin and Italy with a high quality product and bring it to the world, and the world to bring it here to Turin.

Instead, I ask Stefano Quercetti what are the added values of working in a network with other companies that are all committed to ‘Made in Italy’ and excellence?

Quercetti, I believe, was one of the last companies to join Ebt and I was a little perplexed at first, precisely because of the huge difference in proposals within this brand. In fact, this is precisely the great merit of EBT, which encompasses the excellence of many sectors within our Turin society, and being able to work closely with entrepreneurs gives you a totally different sense compared to a standard operation. You feel part of a very small community where the quality of the product is central, absolutely the quality that is born in Turin and exported to the world, so I felt not good but better.

And now a question to both of you: why should you choose made in Italy today?

Stefano Quercetti

Made in Italy is still extremely important today because it is an extremely powerful international brand, one of the most widespread in the world because it encapsulates all the main values of the EBT group as well, i.e. product quality, design, attention to detail, which is what makes the difference in any field.

Luca Boffa

Stefano has explained very well why we are made in Italy, and what I can add is that the Italian people have an excellent mind, they are a people of thinkers, researchers, so the product we bring out is never a mass-produced product and that is why there are very few multinationals but we are the country with the largest number of small and medium-sized companies. EBT is an example: there are 19 of us, we are growing every year, they are medium to large companies in one area that are leaders in their fields, those that aim for the highest quality – then maybe even the big groups take their cue. Made in Italy is a choice of quality and not only because the world says ‘made in Italy is quality’ but because there is research behind everything that is brought out.

I see next to Stefano quercetti a memory from my childhood: the educational game of tacks that I used for years. However, there is a novelty: today it is an organic and eco-friendly game. So I take the opportunity to ask how a tradition as solid as that of Quercetti toys, which is also so beloved, can also exploit innovation and research without losing its identity.

Stefano Quercetti

Tradition within our company is like the foundation of a house, so it is important: it is our history, it is our life that starts there and then evolves. Our innovation is based on our tradition and these pegs you see by my side represent this in full, because we wanted to make an iconic product for us but using totally innovative materials that are organic but involve a different amount of technology than our standard, which involved a huge investment in research and development. It is now a very good product and is largely composed – more than 40 per cent – of CFC wood, so it is extremely compatible and environmentally sustainable and is a small feather in our cap.

You both talked about quality and research for your companies. I then ask Luca Boffa what other levers are important besides quality.

Luca Boffa

Quality is one of the most important points, but it is not only quality that we must focus on but research. Research then leads to quality; one must be able to re-invent oneself, thus not being static. Our company started with my father in ’83, but my grandfather had already been doing this job since ’59. I think we have touched all areas of construction: my grandfather did steelwork for Fiat, my father started by doing industrial sheds in 2000, we did shopping centres in 2010, we started with residences. Today we are moving to Milan so the goal is to never stand still and always aim for innovation. Today we are on our fifth project in Turin with Up Town and it will be a totally different project from the others that have one common thread, which is that they are made by the Building, hence by a brand and proven quality. But behind it all there is research and the desire to improve each time, so the secret in my opinion lies there.

I would like to return to the subject of eco-sustainability and ask Stefano Quercetti: for you, it was undoubtedly a very strong ethical choice and also a very demanding one at an economic level, and was it also a winning one at a marketing level?

Stefano Quercetti

At last year’s trade fair in Nuremberg in February, there was something of a plebiscite to underline the importance of using these plastics within the toy world. It is very difficult to use them contrary to what one might initially think. What is still not so clear to the public is that they are plastics that cost much more than the standard anyway, both as raw material and in processing. While the market is not yet ready to bear a cost proportional to the investment we have made, it is definitely a trend to be maintained and we will develop it as fully as possible. But I hope that the public also realises what is behind it.

And now we come to current events: this is undeniably a time of severe crisis, but I wanted to ask Luca Boffa how much this crisis can be used as an opportunity.

Luca Boffa

Well, we as a sector have been in crisis for 12 years now, so let’s say that if we are here it’s because crises are always an opportunity and logically, as I said before, you have to be able to change, don’t be afraid to change. This is a slightly different crisis because for now it is not yet a systemic crisis, it is a period crisis. If the period continues much longer it may become a systemic crisis that we will carry with us for perhaps 10-15 years. But there are good opportunities in our sector: nowadays there are more things to buy, so we who buy buildings on land, so called sky-land, there are more to sell because there are funds fleeing Italy, there are private families who want to sell so there are opportunities. Then the opportunity must still be commensurate with the financial strength.

This period crisis is obviously due to covid and so I ask both of you how difficult it was to maintain high quality standards and when I had to change jobs for example with smart working in your sectors.

Stefano Quercetti

This period is extremely difficult in all respects, both from a business and organisational point of view within a company whose virus has had a truly devastating effect because it only takes a single case to bring a production department to a standstill. So it is putting a huge strain on our production capacity, right now it is reduced to 1/3 so we have lost 2/3 of our production capacity. As of tomorrow we will have to resume but it is really becoming so difficult to manage that you can’t even tell customers when the goods will be available anymore, because you really don’t know, it depends on the outcome of the swabs and you don’t know that until they get to you and they probably get to you after 7, 8, 10 days. Lately we have been getting it after 10 days, so it is very difficult, but we are still making it.

And in your sector Luca?

Luca Boffa

We are a productive sector so people on the construction site cannot be replaced by working from home. We already suffered a lot between March and April and May, with work at a standstill because they hadn’t stopped us but the construction warehouse, quarries, transport were blocked. We do not realise that we are all connected to each other, so it is been very complicated. We personally are either open or we are closed, there is no such thing as ‘half open’ and ‘half closed’, especially on the construction site, but also the work in the office is a design work, a work of ideas, of exchanging ideas, interactions between people that cannot be done each at home so for us this can only be a period, a moment, we manage this situation but it cannot last more than a few more months. Otherwise, alternative solutions must be found, but which I cannot tell you what they might be.

So I would like to thank our two guests who helped us today to understand how this connection between companies that they spoke about in their last answers can become a virtuous network for the growth of the Italian system and individual companies.
